Mystery Gift: a Retrospective.

24 days of beer, what a month! Looking back how good was the Mystery Gift Pack? Well as with most things there were positives and negatives.

Negatives: High cost, out of season beers such as ISA’s and wheats, boring beers.

Positives: A beer a day! Breadth of style, top shelf beers like Thor’s hammer!

Worst Beers:

1. Parallel 49 Filthy Dirty I.P.A. 1.5/5

2. Parallel 49 Gypsy Tears 2/5

3. Parallel 49 Craft Lager 2.5/5

3. Central City Copper Ale 2.5/5

This makes me think of Parallel 49 as more of a hit or miss brewery, but i think it should be said the P49 had a lot of 3-4 star beers that didn’t make any list.

Edit: In fairness to P49 and there beer’s i am not an IPA lover and generally tend to prefer English IPA’s and more well balanced rather then hop-bitternes-forward. In other words take this with a grain of salt.

Best Beers:

1. Central City Imperial IPA 4.5/5

3. Central City IPA 4.25/5

3. Parallel 49 Toques of Hazard. 4.25/5

Central City takes 2 of 3 here which surprises me slightly as when i was going through the pack I looked forward to the Parallel 49 more than the Central. But the imperial IPA was awesome, also keep in mind i still haven’t had Thor’s Hammer yet.

Central City Pale Ale 4/5

Central City ESB 4/5

Central City ISA 3.75/5

This is a testament to how good Central City is at making old standards awesome!

Have to say I disagree on the Filthy Dirty and Gypsy Tears. The big dissapointments for me were the Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter It tasted like an ashtray, the Shwarswald (sp) as it was awful in bottles but great on tap at the launch party. Agree that the standard boring stuff was unwelcome.

Its one of those things where subjectivity (personal taste) gets in the way of objectivity. I’m not a big IPA guy, for me to enjoy an IPA its usually got to be well balanced and not bitter focused, in short those beers were simply not for me. The Schwartzwald, i enjoyed. But i wonder as you mentioned earlier in you own blog if there is chance we simply got unlucky with off bottles now and again.

That makes sense then as I prefer my IPA to be big and bitter personally. Did you find any bottles personally that seemed off? It seems to be hit and miss for a few of us.

My gypsy tears tasted old, i usually don’t mind it but this one was not good.

Ok that explains the bad rating as it is a very good beer for a standard 6 pack release.
