Apple Beer or why is this a thing?

So apple beer seems to be the new things macro’s are pushing on us consumers to seemingly fight the tidal wave of delicious craft options. It is in line with the fruit flavours pushed as the flavour profile for crafty beer like blue moon and Shock top… but why?

Well because we all know what fruit tastes like and how it supposed to taste. When you first started drinking craft beer did you know a stout from an Imperial IPA? Furthermore could you tell me what a good west coast IPA should taste like? Not likely. Fruit based beers give consumers a opportunity to push their taste bud’s envelopes with a familiar flavour. Everyone knows what apples taste like and everyone knows what good v. bad apples taste of, shove some malt beverage in their and even the most novice beer drinker can have an opinion, and we all love opinions.

Wait did you notice i didn’t say beer? Well thats because this shit doesn’t make Reinheitsgebot or german purity law. Whats that? Oh you knew that because it clearly contains something aside from hops, malt, water and yeast? Well yes but in Canadian Constituional law there is also the concept of convention otherwise known as “hey thats a rule, no its not written down as such… but thats just how we roll.”. In other words the terms of the law have changed without formal declaration, and i think we can safely say beer is still beer if things are changed as long as those four ingredients are still included. But this drink doesn’t actually contain hops… seriously… no hops.

I personally have the german purity law. I don’t care what adjuncts my beer contains as long as they are both not gross and they are only added for flavour. No rice or core is aloud unless it is a gluten free beer as it is used for body then. Things like this apple beer are wrong for different reasons. Apple flavour in a beer is caused by the off flavour Acetaldehyde. I have a suspicion that this brewery had an infection of one of its tanks in Canada and is masking it with possibly more apple artificial apple flavour. If you notice in the adds it says in Canada only.

I considered the infection angle (and actually forgot to write about it), but i think what scares me the most about this
“beer” is the lack of hops. This would also suggest the recipe and intention of the beer was to taste of apple as if it was a mistake they would have added hops too. IN my mind the bavarian purity law acts differently. For a beer to be a beer it MUST HAVE water, yeast, hops, and barley… anything additional is ok but nothing less.

Ah I don’t agree as a gruit can be a great beer but uses no hops. Also a proper Sahti should have no hops either. Hops were not even part of the original german purity law.

Usually some kind of spices but not hops.
